September ushers in the fall season – and along with it, cooler temperatures. Now’s the perfect time to transition your home in preparation for winter. Here are some energy savings tips that will help reduce energy usage and save money before the cold weather hits.
Energy Saving Tips
- Change the air filters in your furnace. Dirty filters can increase your energy bills by at least 5%.
- Don’t crank up the heat! Your home is not an oven so there’s no need to crank up your thermostat in the hopes your home will warm up faster. It won’t and you’re just wasting money.
- Everyone likes a nice warm blanket in winter – especially your water heater. An insulating blanket can prevent freezing and ensure steady water temps.
- Did you know overhead fan blades should be positioned differently in summer versus winter? During colder months, the blades should be positioned clockwise, which will help push warm air down from the ceiling.
- Got a fireplace? Check your vents and give it a good cleaning while the weather is still relatively nice.
